A terroir of great white wines

A mixture of clay, limestone, bauxite and sandstone, the subsoil of Assignan is a real diamond in the rough. To this is added the influence of the garrigue, which permeates the grapes to their very core. Undeniably a terroir of great white wines, made from white Grenache, Roussanne, grey Grenache and white Carignan, the Château Castigno estate also boasts a selection of red grape varieties, predominantly Carignan, black Grenache and Syrah, but also Cinsault and Merlot.

This diversity is a real asset when it comes to creating complex blends that extract the very best from each grape.

Organic wine growing
that respects the environment

Although the estate is run organically, our commitment to the environment goes much further than that. At Castigno, respect for the land is what we are all about. From debudding through to trellising, manual harvesting, largely non-mechanised soil work and in-house fertilisation, all our practices seek to protect the land and the vine.

Where men are not enough, horses intervene. From observation is born action. The vines are treated on an individual rather than a systematic base to ensure each and every one receives exactly what it needs to flourish.

Ageing and cellaring

Free from additives and with a strong emphasis on native yeasts, we are able to produce clean, balanced wines in which all the distinctive features of the terroir are masterfully revealed.

Marc Verstraete, the owner, and Clément Mengus, the vineyard manager, ensure that each vintage embodies the unique essence of Castigno.

Our range of fine wines

There is no shame in describing our wines as pure juice from the Assignan terroir, such is the singularity of our soils. The whites delight with their minerality and freshness. Both clean and crisp, they strike a happy balance between acidity, liveliness and depth.

The reds, intended for cellaring, display all the nobility and elegance of extremely fine blends. The younger reds are real fruit forward delicacies, to be savoured on a hot summer’s day.
