Life on the estate, Château Castigno certified Demeter Biodynamic
Château Castigno has been farming organically since its creation and has been organically certified since 2013. It has now taken a further step forward in being awarded the Demeter Biodynamic Certification. Strict and subject to uncompromising specifications, this label recognises a respectful method of production, from the care given to the soil to the bottling of the wines. In the vineyard, we strive to nurture the soil that will nourish the vines. From decoctions through to plant infusions, nettle manure to stimulate natural defences and horn dung, silica and arnica to treat hail damage: nature is a veritable medicine cabinet! At Castigno, we recognise that mechanisation has its limitations, and so our plots are worked as much as possible with the help of our horses. A momentous task, but one that gives us the assurance of protecting our soils.
In the wine cellar, additives are left at the door. No exogenous yeasts or industrial products, only the power of nature and the hand of man. Working with indigenous yeasts, from the most beautiful grapes produced by the soils of the Haut-Languedoc, we produce pure and honest wines that are a true reflection of their terroir.
Because it removes all the safety barriers provided by technology, mainstream treatments and other industrial products, biodynamics requires a lot of control and monitoring. It is a bit like jumping into the void without a net. But what a joy it is to give the terroir the means with which to express its uniqueness. Soils of Assignan, we love you!
